Contributers

I think we are missing one member, Dylan.
Social Networking
Many people go on social networking sites I for one do not go on these sites but many people around the world do.
 Pros
Here are the advantages that could be more then enough to make you join in. There is no fee to get into social networking sites which is good if your low on money and just want to hop in and talk to your friends just like that. Social networking is also were if you have a unique talent and post links to video were you can show off your talent and mabye someone will pick you up for that talent. The other good thing is friends. You have friends that have friends that have friends and so on. This is a great way to find new friends and meet new people and mabye that special someone. This is also a great way to communicate with your friends and family mabye asking when to hang out or whens family dinner? Theres also bad things
Cons
Theres so much stuff people can know about and creep on you. Like your name, birthday, job, favorite place to hang out, age, gender and other types of information. So you have to be careful. While many sites try to keep any of these cases of harassment to small chance of happening like, cyber-stalking, online scams, and identity theft you still may never know.  Some people when there on to much they get really addicted to the certain site like facebook or twitter. They will get on as much as they can to update on every single thing. Sometimes people forget to do homework and so on. Some people you meet on facebook for example might be the best of friends but you dont know him. He sais hes a 14 year old boy named timmy and the he pops the question hey we should meet sometime. you then might say "no thanks I dont know you that well." or you can say "sure lets meet up at blah blah." you meet him and all you see is a 40 year old who grabs you and well your never seen again so be careful.

But if you be safe and double check what your posting then you should glide through with no problems.

Are sports drinks good for teens?

Hi,

I'm sorry about posting so late, but I have been away at a conference for the past four days and have not gotten a chance to. So, without further ado, here it is:

Many parents of active children find themselves debating whether or not sports drinks are actually healthy for their kids to drink. Producers of the drinks insist that these drinks are healthier than giving your child a soda to drink, and more appetizing than a bottle of water. To find out whether these drinks are healthy, we have to list the pros and cons of the drinks.

Sports drinks are loaded with carbohydrates. Carbohydrates act as fuel for the body, and give kids energy for sports. Some also have protein, that when combined with carbohydrates, improves an athlete’s performance. They are also easily accessed through convenience stores or supermarkets. This makes sports drinks very portable, and easy to get your hands on. Also, the flavour of these drinks rather than water makes many children more pleased. Those who do not enjoy water can have these drinks instead, so they are very popular with many people.

But these drinks are also dangerous if consumed in large amounts. Sports drinks have large amounts of sugar and sodium in them, which can make them very unhealthy. The sugar can lead to diabetes, and other diseases. In some drinks, the sugar level is higher than that of a soda! Also, they can dissolve your teeth, due to their acidity. Many contain caffeine, which can lead to dizziness, insomnia, and issues with the nervous system.

So are sports drinks good for teens? I think not. The amount of sugar and sodium in them is almost as high as a soda’s sugar and sodium level. This means that they really are not as healthy as many companies say. Also, for teens who do not like water, there are many other options, like squeezing a bit of citrus into the water, or making tea. Therefore, I believe that sports drinks are not healthy options for teens.

CE Topic #2 Revised

Are sports drinks good for teens? Many people think that they are, but many think they are not. Today I am going to list reasons why I think they are good and bad for teens.

Pros: When you are playing an intense sport or doing a intense workout what would you rather reach for, a sports drink or water, I would think that people would rather reach for the sports drink. The reason people drink sports drinks is because they taste better, are refreshing, and give you more energy. Sports drinks give you more energy because of the ingredients that the companies but into them such as carbohydrates or protein.

Cons: There are definitely cons to drinking sports drinks. Sports drinks can be dangerous if you're just drinking it for the taste, these drinks are made to give you energy when working out or playing sports not when you're just thirsty that's what water is for. If you are drinking these drinks when you're not working out or playing sports drinking these drinks can lead to diabetes or other diseases because they are very high in sugar and sodium.

Personally I think that sports drinks are good for teens when used right, but can be very bad when used wrong.

For this weeks CE Topic I will be picking are sports drinks good for teens? For this topic i think there are lots of pros and cons.

Pros: When your playing sports or doing a intense workout I would rather reach for a sports drink, instead of water. Because sports drink tastes delicous, are very refreshing, and give you more energy. Sports drink are very good when working out or playing sports because the ingredients that the companies who make the drinks   are do give you more energy and be refreshing when you work hard.

Cons: Sports drinks usually cost 2-3 dollars which is really expensive. If you aren't working out or playing sports, sports drinks can be very bad because they have lots of sugar and are high in sodium which is bad when not working out. So instead of going to buy a sports drink when not working out or playing sports, is not only bad for your wallet but also bad for you.

Personally I think sports drinks are both good and bad.

CE Topics week 2

Sorry for the late post. I didn't have time this week so I am posting it now.

My topic is:  are sports drinks good for teens?

This topic has many pros and cons and today I will explain my reasons for this topic.

Sports drinks has been very popular for those people who play sports. Personally when I play badminton I sometimes drink some of this sports drink and I find myself doing better at the sport. Sports drinks gives you tons of energy and also is good source of hydration. There are also some disadvantages for sports drinks. Sports drinks can give you a lot of sugar and it is also quite expensive.

Pros: Hmmmmm, just think of a nice cold sports drink on a hot summer day after playing a intense game of badminton. Personally I would think that a sports drink would be the most refreshing thing to have after playing a intense game of badminton. It refreshes you, gives you energy, and also it tastes super awesome! Sports drinks are also very healthy for you if you do a lot of sports because it has a lot of stuff in this drink that can give you energy. Sports drink can be healthy and properly treated and also it is nice to have after playing an intense game or after a nice run it refreshes you and it wont make you feel like.. TIRED. When I drink the sports drink after cadets and badminton I feel like I'm getting so much energy so it can be good if you drink it after you get tired.

Cons: Just buying a nice cold sports drink from the vending machine in the recreation centre can cost about $2 the least. The sports drink contains many calories and it also contains high sugar and high in sodium. The sports drink can be very refreshing but if you just drink it because you think it tastes good, it can make you fat and also it can waste your money. Would you rather just drink water from the water fountain for free or buy a sports drink for $2. Personally I would drink water from the water fountain and not waste my money and become fat. The sports drink do cost a lot and it would only be good when you work out and play sports. My opinion is that people should drink water instead of sports drink if you are not that exhausted.

Sports drinks have advantages and disadvantages and I hope you would read my blog post and think for a moment weather you want to spend that extra dollar for energy, or just stick with plain water. I hope this post changed your point of views for sports drinks.

Ce Topic (week #2)

Sorry for posting late again but my topic is are sports drinks good for teens?

This topic can be very big but I will try to sum it up for those who don't like to read long boring paragraphs.

I play sports and I do drink sport drinks. There can be many advantages when you drink this. For example, drinking sport drinks taste good, are healthy when you are active, give you energy, and are a good source for hydration. There are also disadvantages. Sport drinks have a lot of sugar and are more expensive. I will now talk about the pros and cons for drinking sport drinks.

Pros: Drinking sport drinks taste good. When I play sports I prefer to have gatorade rather than just plain water. Most people do not drink the amount of water that they should which would make them dehydrated rather than drinking good sport drinks. Sport drinks can be healthy when treated properly. You need to be active for at least 30 minutes before drinking. If you are not active and drink sport drinks, this may harm you. When you actually exercise, they are very good because they provide lots of energy. I even feel stronger when drinking a sport drink rather that water. In conclusion, sport drinks can be very good for you if you use it properly.

Cons: Drinking sport drinks also has negatives. If you do not exercise, then sport drinks are not for you. They contain lots of sugar and sodium that are not healthy for you when you are not active. Sport drinks also cost more as they do more than water. Water is about 80cents and sport drinks are about $2. If money is the problem and you don't exercise, don't waste your money. In conclusion, sport drinks contain lots of sugar and sodium that can be unhealthy if not used properly. They do cost more but if you work out or play sports, it's worth the extra cents to have more energy when you need it.

Sport drinks have advantages and disadvantages. Many athletes don't drink water but sport drinks for fuel when exercising. They also do drink water in there free time but for training its sport drinks. I personaly think they are a pro since I am an athlete and need to fuel my body. They are the perfect drink for me when exercising. Hope this changed your point of view on if sport drinks are good for teens.

Ce Topic (week #1)

Sorry for posting late this week but my topic is should there be a year long or balanced school year.

There are benifits and cons to this suggestion. Personally, I can't decide if I agree or don't. Let me make a couple of pros and cons for this topic and then you can decide for yourself. First, having a year round school is not such a bad idea since many people forget a few things they learned in the two months vacation that we recieve (July to August). This also benefits students that come out of the country. If they come at the time we have our break, they can't learn anything. The year long school allows students to jump right into the semester and not have to wait until the new one begins. I don't know exactly how the breaks would work. I don't know how they would be split up but I know there would be some kind of break.

Now this year long break may be split up, and when split up may not be as long as we hope. This will not give students as much time for vacation and time to spend with family and friends. This is when we get to the cons. As I said, this will give students the same amount of vacation time, but will be split up. Another con is that a lot of people sign up for summer camps and summer sports and without the summer break students will not be able to attend them. Some businesses may even go out of services.

Anyway, you can decide if having a school year round is a con or pro. After this I have decided that it is a con due to what I said in these paragraphs. Not enough time to travel and time to spend with family and friends. Although having school all year will make you stay in the same routine and state than when you come off the holidays. You may also remember more. I feel this is still a con. Hope this may change your mind or view this situation from a different point.

Revised -
Sports drinks:  Are they good for teens? As a person who plays sports a lot, I will tell you there are definite benefits to drinking them.  However, research has also indicated there are some drawbacks to using sports drinks.

My opinion on sports drinks is that they have benefits and disadvantages. When I play sports, I would much rather have a sport drink, such as Gatorade, over water. Mainly because I like the taste much better and I feel that I have much more energy when playing. It's proven by scientists that sports drinks make kids last 24% longer when they are playing their sport. Also kids, when having water, don't drink a lot of it which makes them dehydrated. But when having a sport drink they are all for. I have a friend who plays a sport with me. He usually never brings anything to drink. So one day he got so dehydrated that he started feeling sick and nauseous. Then he passed out for not drinking anything. He later stated doing a plan with sports drinks. It was the Gatorade plan. Since then he usually bring Gatorade with him and since then he has not passed out yet. Not many kids like drinking just plain old water, they like sports drinks better and prefer to drink it more. Also sport drinks have a lot of ingredients in them, where water doesn't. So when drinking sport drinks all the ingredients get absorbed into your body. Water has nothing in it therefor nothing gets absorbed.

My other opinion of sports drinks is that they have a down side to them. For starters they cost much more than just a water bottle. It usually costs roughly 50 cents more to buy a sport drink. Since sports drinks have become so popular today, the prices and marketing have gone up with these drinks. People think that sports drinks are a thing to have when u think you are going to have a 5 minute workout. But no, sport drinks are for people that are doing intense workouts. So you can't have a sport drink when you walk up the stairs once. Scientists say that you must do at least an intense workout for at least an hour. They say this because sport drinks have many ingredients that aren’t healthy for you. All sport drinks have a lot of sugar and sodium in them. Gatorade, or other sports drinks, roughly has 14 grams of sugar in them while water has 0 grams of sugar. Also they contain a lot of carbs.

I have listed some points about why and why not you should have sports drinks when doing a workout. My opinion of sports drinks are... that they are beneficial for teens. Sports drinks can be a bad thing to have, but if your having a intense workout I sugggest a sport drink over a water.

CE Topic #1 Revised

Revised copy.

Sorry for this being late but I was invited to the group late, due to technical difficulties.
A balanced school calendar?  What is that? A balanced calendar is also referred to as year-round schooling.  But is it truly year-round?  Year-round schooling is often misunderstood to be school all year without breaks. It does occur throughout the year, but it still includes several breaks and the same number of days as our current school system.  For example the breaks in the balanced calendar are a month long for Winter, Spring, and Summer break, so there is the same amount of days of just evenly distributed throughout the year.

Pros: For the balanced or year round calendar there are some pros. For example instead of having two weeks break for Winter, and Spring break you would have one month to spend more time with family and friends. Also for Summer break instead of having two months you would only get 1 month so you would forget less of the knowledge that you learned the last school year.

Cons: There are definitely cons to the balanced calendar. In Winter break you wouldn't be have fun being inside if  it was raining all of winter. For Summer break lots of people go on long vacation's for the whole two months but then if the balanced calendar went in affect their vacation's would be cut short. Also in Summer break lots of kids play sports that go for the whole two months and then if the balanced calendar went in affect the schedules for the sports would get messed up.

Personally I think that the balanced calendar is a bad idea because it would mess up lots of peoples schedules for sports.

Sorry for this being late but I was invited to the group late, due to technical errors. My topic is should there be a year long or balanced calender. I think that the year round or balanced calenders are bad ideas, and here is why. For the year round calender I think that it is a bad idea because there would be no time to go on vacations or just spend time with family or friends, students and teachers would be very busy. But there is one Con to the year round calender and that is students would have allot more time to embrace knowledge.

For the balanced calender , I think it is a bad idea personally because during winter break it doesn't snow that much here, and i don't think students would like sitting inside all day watching the rain. Also during summer break was shortened to one month students sports would be a lot hard to play because lots of people play sports in the summer. Personally I think that the Surrey School Board should keep the schedule the same.

Should fitness programs be in schools educational system?

Hi

My name is Shawn Liu and today my topic is about:
Should fitness programs be in schools educational system?

For this question I am going to be answering a yes and a no and here are some reasons why.

For starters, PE can be a very healthy for young students like us.
For the people who mainly dont do exercise a lot and tend to play video games I would say that PE is a very good subject for school. Many people who want to be famous and want to be sucessful in the future must have a very good fitness degree. PE also makes your body more fit and fit bodies make you more smart and healthy so for the people who are lazy and isnt athletic at all I think that fitness is a good program in the educational system.

Some kids are very healthy and have many afterschool sports teams. Many asian parents in this world now personally do not agree PE is a very good program for the educational system. Many asians tend to send there kids to afterschool programs that have sports and think that the education should be more important. Personally I also have to agree with the asians because personally, PE can be a waste of time to some people who are very fit. Education is a very big part of our lives and basically if we had PE, some people would think that we waste 70mins in school and we can learn so many stuff in that 70mins. Education is also very important so I that is my reason why PE is bad for the schools educational system.

Those are my thoughts for PE and how it is good or bad in the schools educational system.

Hi,

My topic for this post is
4. Should schools / government agencies be regulating our lunches?
Here it is!
Schools all over Canada and the USA are enforcing strict new food policies. The policies for each province or state differ, but generally have the same idea; fried, fatty foods will be banned, and in their place will be healthier options.
A school in Chicago has already banned bagged lunches completely (food from home), and students are required to eat food from the cafeteria. Some other schools confiscate any unhealthy food from student’s lunches, meaning any fried, fatty, processed, or sugary food.
The schools are not just banning unhealthy food. They are also introducing healthier food, which children might not have the option of eating at home because of money troubles, working parents, etc.
But not all parents are happy with these changes. Banning lunches from home limits the child’s food options, and does not let the child eat what they really want to eat. It does not let people have the freedom of eating something different, going out to lunch, or having a nice home-cooked meal.
Also, some parents like to be able to control what is in their kid’s lunch. With some of these new policies make it difficult for parents to be able to monitor their children’s lunches, especially in some schools where children are not even aloud to bring food from home!
Banning fatty foods from schools does not mean that kids will not find other means of getting it. Instead of eating at the cafeteria, students just go outside to restaurants to eat. To stop this from happening, some governments are trying to eliminate all fast food within walking distance of schools. This not only is unfair to students and people who live in the area, but also to the restaurants in the area.
But some people favour these policies. Parents who work a lot sometimes do not have the time to make the most nutritious choices while making lunches for their children. And teens that make their own lunches do not include the most nutritious items that they probably should be including. Banning unhealthy foods also helps educate people on what sorts of lunches are healthy, and how to make them taste good as well.
And the fact that many school lunches do not contain any fruits or vegetables helps in showing the benefits of these new policies. Some people simply do not have the money or time to buy fruits and vegetables, so the fact that healthier options are being introduced into schools is quite beneficial for many students, and their parents.
Though there are many benefits to these new food policies, I think that they are not as useful as the government might have hoped. Forcing students to eat a cafeteria lunch not only limits their options, but makes students resentful for not getting a choice of what they want to eat. And if students really wanted some fast food, they could just go outside to buy some, which defeats the purpose of the regulations.
Therefore, I believe that schools and government agencies should not be regulating our school lunches.

Sorry, it is rather long, but I hope it was worth the read! Also a reminder, everyone in the blog has to post by tomorrow evening.

Should fitness programs be in schools educational system? For this question, I am a yes for it and a no for it. Here are a couple reasons why I am against it and for it.

For starters, physical education can be very healthy for young students. Usually most students don't do exercise daily. Young people are suppossed to do roughly half an hour to an hour of exercise daily. When you put this in a school program, kids must do it, thus getting exercise inside of school. Some kids arn't athletic at all, so they hate fitness inside of school. I two opinions of what schools should do. The 1st one is that they make two seperate coarses for fitness. One more active and one a little more fun, but still allowing kids to get exercise. My second opinion is that kids have a choice to do things in PE. So like beep test or push-up test, some kids can't do that because they arn't capable of doing it. Also when you play games you should have a choice in it. So have a teacher make a list off games, and each kid could sign up for a game that they want to play instead of being forced to play.

those are my thoughts of making physical education a manditory coarse in school districts.
